He grabbed his clothes and tore them in two. 12 While Elisha was watching, he was crying out, “My father, my father! The chariot and horsemen of Israel!” Then he could no longer see him. They went between Elijah and Elisha, and Elijah went up to heaven in a windstorm. The water divided, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.ĩ When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “What can I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha answered, “May I receive a double portion of the prophetic spirit that energizes you?” 10 Elijah replied, “That’s a difficult request! If you see me taken from you, may it be so, but if you don’t, it will not happen.”ġ1 As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a fiery chariot pulled by fiery horses appeared. 8 Elijah took his cloak, folded it up, and hit the water with it. 7 The fifty members of the prophetic guild went and stood opposite them at a distance, while Elijah and Elisha stood by the Jordan. Be quiet.”Ħ Elijah said to him, “Stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he replied, “As certainly as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they traveled on together. 5 Some members of the prophetic guild in Jericho approached Elisha and said, “Do you know that today the Lord is going to take your master from you?” He answered, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”Ĥ Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he replied, “As certainly as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho. 3 Some members of the prophetic guild in Bethel came out to Elisha and said, “Do you know that today the Lord is going to take your master from you?” He answered, “Yes, I know. 2 Elijah told Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As certainly as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. Pray together and thank God for friends and ask Him to help you stand alone and not be afraid.2 Just before the Lord took Elijah up to heaven in a windstorm, Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal. Consider ways that you could give a friend a blessing.

Think about a time that your child received comfort or a blessing from a friend. Point out the comfort that Elijah received from Elisha. Whenever you or your child is afraid, recite the verse together. Pick out a verse such as Psalm 56:3 or I John 4:4 and memorize it. Point out that God spoke to Elijah to comfort him and that we can find comfort by reading the Bible. Explain that even adults get scared sometimes.

Take about times when you and your child were afraid. Also, demonstrate trying to light a piece of wet newspaper and show how great God’s power was to light a wet offering on fire. If you wish, you can use a safe place to demonstrate lighting a piece of dry paper.

Point out that even though they were stronger in number, God is infinitely stronger. You can demonstrate the vast difference in numbers by using pennies, buttons or other items to show your child how many more prophets there were for Baal. Think about how brave Elijah was to stand up to the 450 false prophets of Baal. Talk about how, just like today, people didn’t always want to listen to what God had to say. Remind your child that the widow didn’t have much, but she trusted God with the little she had. Explain how God did another miracle to provide for Elijah, the widow, and her son because their ingredients never run out. Ask them what happens to the other contains? They become empty. Ask your child to help you pour the ingredients into a bowl for mixing. Beforehand, measure out all the ingredients you need to make a loaf of bread. Explain that they only had food left for one more meal. Share how later God took Elijah to a widow and her son. Point out that you are feeding them, and it was a miracle for the ravens to bring food to Elijah instead of eating it themselves. You can take the child to a petting zoo or park and feed ducks or geese, or feed a pet at home. God told Elijah to leave that place and that He would look after him near a stream.Īsk the child if they have ever been hungry. Explain how God told Elijah to tell King Ahab there would be no more rain for some time. Explain that before people had a whole Bible to read, a prophet was tasked with bringing God’s word to the people.
